DOGON - SATIMBE Ritual mask called "satimbe"... - Lot 3 - Vasari Auction
DOGON - SATIMBE Ritual mask called "satimbe" in natural polychrome wood with a crusty patina, it is surmounted by a woman sitting on a throne with her arms open, she is wearing fringes of strings decorated with cowries and plastic beads and dressed in vegetable fibers 1960's Height : 102 cm 102 cm - Width : 63 cm - Depth : 20 cm (wear and patina of use) Note: The particularity of the satimbe masks is that they are surmounted by a seated figure representing Ya Sigine, a woman whose role is to counterbalance the omnipotence of the male in the social and political order within Dogon society. Ya Sigine is represented in a constant manner on the satimbe masks that she surmounts: her gaze is stretched towards the horizon, her chest is upright, but above all her disproportionately long and bent arms are stretched towards the sky. The mask itself is stylized, its features are geometric.
