Porcelain Lothe apparatus, siphon for seltzer... - Lot 83 - Vasari Auction
Porcelain Lothe apparatus, siphon for seltzer water. Height : 21 cm Height : 21 cm We join a bowl and a cup Lunéville Keller and Guérin in fine earthenware with decoration on green bottom of flowers in bloom. Point culture: "Conceived for a domestic use, these carafes simple in their design, do not require neither return in factory, nor gas to create water of carbonated. The operation of the device is indeed based on a chemical reaction: a slightly carbonated water resulting from the mixture of an aqueous solution with tartaric acid (or possibly citric acid) and another containing an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate. This artificially carbonated water, with a slightly salty and medicated taste, was to be consumed immediately. A rudimentary but effective technique. The devices resembled porcelain carafes, with the particularity of having an inner partition allowing to connect two different liquids to its outlet. The tip of the spout, resembling a pig's nose, has two openings, each connected to one of the internal compartments. The mixing is not done in the carafe, but at its outlet. It is in the glass that the two aqueous solutions mix to form temporarily carbonated water."
