WATTEAU Antoine (1684-1721), after - Lot 23
WATTEAU Antoine (1684-1721), after The Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera Color engraving Sight size: 54.5 x 76.5 cm Framed piece Note: Le Pèlerinage à l'île de Cythère is a painting by Antoine Watteau, completed in 1717, and presented by the painter as a reception piece for the Académie royale de peinture. It enabled Antoine Watteau to enter the institution as a "history painter", recognized for the quality of his work and its subject, which may refer to ancient pastoral scenes. The painting marked the advent of a new pictorial genre, the "fête galante". Only his two pupils, Nicolas Lancret and Jean-Baptiste Pater, were admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. The painting is now in the Musée du Louvre.
