Tenmoku-type conical bowl, flared on a small heel, in dark b - Lot 197
Tenmoku-type conical bowl, flared on a small heel, in dark brown stoneware with a brown glaze streaked with fine brown "hare's fur", stopping above the foot on the reverse to form a thick bead, the lip encircled by silver-plated metal. With its Japanese box inscribed with the four kanji, tenmoku chawan, "tenmoku tea bowl". China, Fujian, Jian kilns, Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) Height 7.5 cm - Diam. 12.5 cm Note: the term tenmoku is a Japanese word derived from the Chinese Tianmu, from the name of a mountain where there was a temple using this type of ceramic for tea. As early as the 14th century, such bowls arrived in Japan, where they were highly appreciated for the tea ceremony and subsequently produced locally. Thus, it was the Japanese term for these bowls that came to be used in the West, rather than the Chinese Jian zhan, "Jian (tea) bowl".
