Auction catalog of Modern Paintings from the Collection H... - Lot 96
Auction catalog of Modern Paintings from the Collection H... (pour Hoschedé) à l'Hôtel Drouot le mardi 20 avril 1875 - Commissaire Priseur Me Charles Pillet Expert M. Durand-Ruel - 1 vol. in-4° - bound in half basane with corners, spine with five nerves - 48 pp + 67 plates - Invitation to visit the private exhibition pasted on the flyleaf, label Victor Legrand - Annotation in ink "Cte L. Clément de Riq 1878". (binding: corners dulled, minor rubbing of boards - inside: sale results written in purple ink, good condition) Note: "Ernest Hoschedé's name is directly associated with the Impressionist movement; indeed, from 1873 onwards, he commissioned numerous Impressionist artists, including Claude Monet and Manet. In 1877, he went partly bankrupt for debts, and on June 5 and 6, 1878, his own collection of 138 works, including Sisley, Renoir, Manet, Morisot, Pissarro and Monet, was auctioned off under the hammer of art dealer Georges Petit. This is not his first sale: Under cover of anonymity, Hoschedé held several prior sales, including one in January 1874 and another in April 1875, with expert Paul Durand-Ruel. These two sales, which saw Sisley and Degas depart, were intended to test the market, and were rather disappointing." (internet source)
