CHEVVILLARD, Vincent (1841–1904) After - Lot 148
CHEVVILLARD, Vincent (1841–1904) After A Postman’s Mistake—A Priest in Front of a Poster of Candidate Camel-Leon Two enhanced prints Signed in the lower right and annotated “after Chevillard” in the lower left. 13.2 x 9.4 cm Note: “Le Rappel” was a French daily newspaper, founded on May 4, 1869, at the end of the Second Empire, and published until 1933. At the beginning of the Third Republic, it embodied a radical-republican tendency. The newspaper, which benefited from the Press Law of May 11, 1868, was founded on the initiative of Victor Hugo on the eve of the general elections. However, the five official founders were Albert Barbieux, Charles Hugo, and François-Victor Hugo—the writer’s two sons—as well as Auguste Vacquerie, Paul Meurice, and Henri Rochefort. Unlike with *L’Événement* in 1848, Victor Hugo did not wish to be listed among them, but he sent a letter that appeared on the front page of the first issue, published on May 4, 1869.
