Émilien PIGANEAU (1833–1911) The Garonne River at Bacalan (Bordeaux) Oil on canvas Signed lower left and dated 1892, titled on the back of the stretcher (stains, losses in the paint layer along the edges) 31 x 54 cm Note: Émilien Piganeau was a painter, draftsman, and archaeologist. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he later became an independent instructor at the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 1878. He became archivist for the Gironde Commission for Historic Monuments, where he compiled the first catalog of the notes and drawings in its collection. He was a founding member of several archaeological societies in the Aquitaine region. Some of his drawings are the only remaining records of monuments that have since disappeared. He compiled a list of unusual bells in the department and prepared a catalog of all the antiquities in the municipalities of Gironde. Founded the Saint-Émilion Society for History and Archaeology (Committee on Historical and Scientific Research, an institute affiliated with the École nationale des chartes)
