China, early 20th century Semi-formal court headdress, of the so-called "pomp hat" type, jiguan, in black silk, covered with a fringe of red silk cords, and topped with a dingdai, an ornament formed by a pink enameled porcelain button, decorated with a stylized Shou, longevity, character, carried on a gilded copper base adorned with a dragon. The hat is embellished with a horsehair finial and a two-eyed peacock feather, indicating that the wearer belonged to the Manchu nobility - three eyes being reserved for imperial princes and one eye for officials.
On the reverse, the mark Dong Zhaokui, one of Beijing's most renowned traditional stores at the end of the Qing dynasty, specialized in the sale of hats and clothing accessories. Length: 28 cm - Width: 27 cm Provenance: By descent from a diplomat posted in China between 1945 and 1949.
