KONONGO Benoit (1919-2007) Labor Carved wood Signed on the terrace KONONGO BENOIT A BRELE Height 44 cm (wear, trace of white) Note: "The artist was introduced to traditional Teke sculpture by his uncle Muta Mayola. In 1943, the architect Roger Errel enrolled him at the Arts Appliqués. From 1945 onwards, Konongo received commissions from the colonial authorities and the clergy, including the statues adorning the Basilique Sainte-Anne du Congo. In the 1950s, he opened his own gallery in central Brazzaville. Taken over by his son Bernard Konongo, the Konongo gallery still exists today."
