Note: Léon Pouteau spent several years in Vicq-sur-Gartempe, during and after the First World War.
and after the First World War. Born in 1868 in Herbault (Loir-et-Cher), he studied with painter Charles Busson at the Académie de Tours and took part in the
the Salon des Artistes Français in 1888. He then left France to settle in Brussels, where he produced a series of paintings
for an art dealer. Declared unfit for military service during the war, he retired to live with his sister, Madame
Chédozeau, in Vicq-sur-Gartempe, while his wife and daughter fled to the United States. For several years, he lived in a house
a house in the village of Vicq, near the present-day town hall, before moving to the neighboring village of Angles-sur
l'Anglin. During these years spent in the Gartempe and Anglin valleys, he painted numerous pictures depicting
landscapes, scenes of rural life, portraits...
