Framed piece
Note: Ferdinand VII was King of Spain from March to May 1808, and again from 1814 until his death in 1833.
The eldest son of King Charles IV and Marie-Louise de Bourbon-Parme, he dethroned his father during the Aranjuez uprising in March 1808, then reigned for two months before being forced to abdicate in May 1808 at the Bayonne interview. On his return to the throne in 1814, he enjoyed unrivalled confidence and popularity among the Spanish people. However, Désiré soon proved to be an absolutist sovereign, and was regarded by his subjects as unscrupulous, vengeful and a traitor to the Constitution. The last period of his reign was characterized by fierce repression, accompanied by a moderate absolutist policy that provoked deep discontent in absolutist circles grouped around Ferdinand's brother Infante Charles de Bourbon.
