Kasgai rug (warp, weft and wool pile), Southwest Iran, circa 1880-1900 480 x 214 cm The Kasgai are nomadic tribes living in the Fars region (an area stretching from the Zagros mountains to the shores of the Persian Gulf). At the market in Shiraz, they trade their carpets for the necessities of life. This carpet is embellished with large polychrome palmettes on a navy blue background with small geometric motifs. A wide red border with multicolored geometric decoration is framed by two counter-borders. Wear, old restorations, accidents, fraying.
