18th-century biblical art print (Duflos) - An early 18th-cen - Lot 655
18th-century biblical art print (Duflos) - An early 18th-century engraving titled “Susanna and the Elders.” The handwritten inscription in the lower right corner reads “Du Flos sc.” for Claude Duflos (1665–1727), a highly renowned French engraver of the Louis XIV and Regency periods, who specialized in reproducing masterpieces by the great masters. This depicts a famous biblical scene from the Book of Daniel. The young and devout Susanna is caught bathing in her garden by two elderly men (usually respected judges) who attempt to seduce her and blackmail her. In the background, one can make out a fountain adorned with a small cherub (Cupid), and a jar in the foreground on the left. This is the result of a makeshift montage created by a former collector or framer, who reused the second sheet of paper as a rigid backing to reinforce the first. This engraving has another distinctive feature: another engraving is glued to the back. There is absolutely no thematic, artistic, or historical connection between these two engravings. The fact that the first is glued onto the second is simply the result of a makeshift mounting carried out by a former collector or framer, who reused the second sheet of paper as a rigid backing to reinforce the first.
