17th-Century Engraving - This work is a magnificent 18th-century etching and burin engraving titled *The Soldier and His Mistress* (or, sometimes, *The Officer and the Courtesan*). It is an interpretation of a famous painting from the Dutch Golden Age by Gabriel Metsu (1629–1667). Gabriel Metsu was the master of Dutch genre painting who created the original painting in the 17th century, and Jean-Jacques Le Veau was one of the most skilled French engravers of the 18th century, particularly renowned for the finesse of his renderings of textures (metal, fabrics).
