Militaria: Photo/Aviation/WWI World War I 1914–1918 — Minister J.L. Dumesnil’s Historic Visit to the Squadron — Humor from the Front. An exceptional and extremely rare original photograph of great historical and political significance. This precious visual record captures the official inspection visit of Jacques-Louis Dumesnil, then Under Secretary of State for Military Aviation, at the heart of a snow-covered field airbase. He is pictured surrounded by French air force officers, in front of a biplane parked on the runway. On the reverse, a delightful handwritten inscription from that era sheds unique light on the pilots’ esprit de corps: “Mr. Dumesnil’s visit to the Squadron—He’s looking for… what he lost.” This original document captures both a significant institutional moment and the trench humor of the aviation pioneers as they dealt with political authorities during World War I. Minister Dumesnil, Aviation 14/18, Military Inspection, Fighter Squadron, Vintage Biplane
