Militaria: Letter/Censorship/WWII World War II 1939–1945 – R - Lot 96
Militaria: Letter/Censorship/WWII World War II 1939–1945 – Rare Envelope Marked “Delivery Suspended by Military Authorities” October 1939 - An exceptional and extremely rare original postal document of great historical and philatelic interest for the period of the “Phoney War.” This authentic envelope bears witness to the radical security measures implemented by the French secret services as soon as the country entered the war.Sent on October 4, 1939, from the city of La Rochelle (Charente-Inférieure 17) to Busserolles (Dordogne 24), this mail was permanently seized. It bears on both the front and back the remarkable and highly sought-after two-color stamp from that era: “Delivery Suspended BY MILITARY AUTHORITIES.”The envelope was opened for inspection by the Bordeaux censorship commission, then resealed with its original regulation gummed strip reading “MILITARY POSTAL INSPECTION,” stamped with the official oval stamp of Inspector No. 2B 273. A certified authentic specimen of absolute rarity, indispensable for crowning a collection specializing in the history of military censorship and the philately of 1939–1940.
