Militaria: Document/Empire/Napoleonic Wars - Handwritten Let - Lot 103
Militaria: Document/Empire/Napoleonic Wars - Handwritten Letter Regarding Conscription into the Coast Guard & Grenadiers - Dated October 1809 - Ambarès (Gironde 33) - A precious and highly evocative original archival document that immerses the reader in the heart of the First Empire’s military administrative machinery. This letter, written entirely by hand with a period quill pen, bears the historic date of October 12, 1809 (Campaign of 1809 / Wagram).Drafted and signed by the Mayor of Ambarès (Gironde), it is addressed with the utmost urgency to the Mayor of Montferrand (Gironde). The military order is explicit and calls for a meeting to organize the local contingent and reinforce the defense troops: “given the extensive work involved in the operation concerning the coast guard… to reinforce the two companies of grenadiers and chasseurs.” The reverse side features the superb original handwritten address, embellished with the regulatory and official notation “Military Service,” which served as a postage exemption. Two period town hall stamps are visible.
