Militaria: Military Letter / French Revolution / Sète Coasta - Lot 104
Militaria: Military Letter / French Revolution / Sète Coastal Artillery (Hérault 34) / Refusal to Serve and Desertion - A superb official handwritten letter dated 17 Nivôse, Year VIII (January 7, 1800), featuring a printed letterhead reading “The French Republic, one and indivisible,” surmounted by the official Seal of Liberty. The document was written by Captain Chauvain, commander of the Administrative Council of the 4th Company of Coastal Artillerymen of the 9th Military Division District, based at the Place de Cette (Sète). The letter is addressed directly to the Chief of Staff of the Division in Montpellier. The historical content concerns security and military justice: the captain reports the arrest and imprisonment of a gunner named Antoine Dauma, a native of Montpellier, who was labeled a “deserter” after fleeing and then rejoining the company. The letter also mentions the handling of legal bulletins. The address on the back remains perfectly legible, with beautiful handwritten notes indicating its military transmission. 9th Military Division / Gunners / Military Justice / Desertion / Conscientious Objector / Revolutionary Archive
