Militaria: French Revolution/Letter from the Committee of Pu - Lot 141
Militaria: French Revolution/Letter from the Committee of Public Safety to the National Agent of Year II/Bec-d'Ambès/Bazas(Gironde 33) - A military and administrative letter from the French Revolution (Reign of Terror, circa 1794 / Year II), demonstrating the direct links between the central Jacobin government and the provinces. This letter, which contains no official correspondence, was sent from the Paris offices of the Committee of Public Safety. The envelope is addressed to “The National Agent for the District of Bazas,” a special post then held by Citizen Lafargue, in the department of Bec-d’Ambès (the revolutionary and patriotic name for the Gironde between 1793 and 1795). Very fine and clear impression of the official red circular wet stamp reading “COMITÉ DE SALUT PUBLIC - ENVOY.” Handwritten notation and red linear postage-free mark reading “CHARGE.”Reverse: Features the original large official red wax seal, bearing the allegory of the Republic (Liberty holding a pike and a Phrygian cap) with legible circular inscriptions around the perimeter from the Committee of Public Safety. Authentic and complete archival document from the Reign of Terror. Sound period rag paper with hand-cut edges, cursive script in brown ink of magnificent clarity, superb contrast between the wax and the revolutionary marking inks. A museum-quality collector’s item.
