Militaria: French Revolution 1793 (Reign of Terror) / Sarlat - Lot 186
Militaria: French Revolution 1793 (Reign of Terror) / Sarlat (Dordogne 24) - Rochefort (Charente-Maritime 17) / Handwritten, signed letter from Father Pierre Vialain to the Municipal Officers of the military port of Rochefort / Looting of a church during the Convention—An exceptional archival account of civil unrest and dechristianization under the National Convention, at the height of the Reign of Terror. This historic letter, dated August 5, 1793 (Year II of the Republic), links the Dordogne district to the great naval arsenal of Charente-Maritime - The transport envelope bears the superb period stamp in black ink reading “24 SARLAT” (the Convention’s departmental postal system). The document also retains on the reverse its original red wax seal, still very clear, bearing the district’s closure marks.
