Militaria: French Revolution 1793 (Reign of Terror) / Toulon - Lot 188
Militaria: French Revolution 1793 (Reign of Terror) / Toulon (Var 83) - Castillon - Rochefort (Charente-Maritime 17) / Handwritten official certificate of embarkation and enrollment on the Ship of the Republic L'Apollon / Sicard Pradier - The Navy’s Civil Armaments Office certifies that the young citizen Sicard Pradier, a native of Castillon, aged only 15 (listed as a novice/ship’s boy), is registered and has embarked aboard the prestigious Ship of the Republic L’Apollon, under the command of Captain Imbert. Signed just a few days before Toulon fell and surrendered to the British, this certificate is at the heart of a major maritime odyssey. The *Apollon* would break through the enemy blockade to flee the rebellious port and escort Republican supporters to the Rochefort arsenal (17), thereby escaping the destruction of the fleet. It bears the handwritten signatures of the civil administrators of the navy (Bailly and Bulay). The bottom bears the official endorsement of the “Provisional Municipal Commissioners of the Commune of Toulon” dated August 18, 1793. The reverse side bears a handwritten archival notation from that period in the name of “Sicard Pradier,” confirming its use on board as a military identification document.
