Militaria: French Revolution 1794 (Reign of Terror) / Évian - Lot 193
Militaria: French Revolution 1794 (Reign of Terror) / Évian (Haute-Savoie 74) - Castillon (Gironde 33) / Original handwritten document from the 1st Battalion of Rhône-et-Loire / Private Jean Gagnard / Signatures of General Staff Officers David & Lalanne / Official stamp of Year II—The document features, in the header beneath the calligraphic mottos “Equality - Liberty,” the rare and sought-after framed official archival stamp “MINUTE,” surmounted by a republican seal of administrative validation. The officers of the unit certify the service and conduct of citizen Jean Gagnard, listed as a native of the canton of Castillon, district of Libourne (Gironde 33), a region then administratively known as Bec-d’Ambès. Enlisted as early as August 1792, he is commended for his exemplary conduct and his service as a “good republican.” The bottom of the document features superb and imposing handwritten signatures embellished with large pen initials: Captain Lalanne, commander of the company; Infantry Chief Capuets; Adjutant-Major Durriez; and Lieutenant Colonel David, who explicitly signed under his rank of “Second in Command.”An authentic original draft document from a military archive of the period (first entry in the register).
