"Militaria: FRENCH REVOLUTION/Year II, 1793/Naval assignment - Lot 198
"Militaria: FRENCH REVOLUTION/Year II, 1793/Naval assignment dated June 28, 1793, from Rochefort (Charente-Inférieure 17)/The bomb vessel Le Sphinx for sailor Jean Gorry of Libourne (Gironde)/Official Arsenal document signed by Charbonnier with a superb Republic letterhead. The document is signed by Navy Commissioner Charbonnier and features, at the top, a splendid and very clear intaglio-engraved vignette of the revolutionary state: “IN THE NAME OF THE FRENCH PEOPLE - NAVY,” depicting the allegory of Liberty holding a pike topped with a Phrygian cap and leaning on a lictor’s fasces. On the reverse, administrative annotations from the period indicate that the application was rejected: “rejected,” along with the names “Jean Gorry, sailor, and Jeanne Bentenac”—a rare and exceptional document of naval military history, pre-printed and handwritten, dated June 28, 1793, Year 2 of the French Republic.
