"Militaria: FRENCH REVOLUTION/Year II, 1794/Navy Certificate of Service dated 22 Prairial, Year II (June 10, 1794) from Bordeaux (Gironde 33)/Sailor Jean Ducarpe of Castillon, bound for the Port of Rochefort/Official document bearing the header “Live Free or Die” and the signature of an officer to be identified. The document is signed in the lower right corner by the deputy head of the Navy’s civil administration (period signature to be identified). The upper portion features a superb official header: “LIBERTY, EQUALITY” framing a circular vignette bearing the text “LIVE FREE OR DIE” surmounted by the Phrygian cap. The reverse side bears handwritten annotations from the time made by the Arsenal administration during the validity check: “Jean Ducarpe, sailor. check if he is on the roster,” the administrative decision “rejected” with a strike-through, his mother’s name “Marie Souchet, mother,” and the verification number “No. 158.” A rare military document of naval history, pre-printed and handwritten, dated in Bordeaux on 22 Prairial, Year 2 of the French Republic, one and indivisible (June 10, 1794)."
