Heriz carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool... - Lot 267 - Vasari Auction
Heriz carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), Northwest Persia, ca. 1920 "Heriz is located in the (north)-east of Tabriz (). At the end of the 19th century, the merchants of Tabriz, always in search of cheap labor, installed a few factories that produced solid carpets of large dimensions (). The decorative theme introduced in Heriz by the merchants of Tabriz was classical, with a medallion and spandrels; But the weavers of Heriz refused the use of cartoons which did not correspond to their traditions, and they continued to weave their carpets by executing the design from memory or sometimes with the help of small vagireh (small carpets used by the weavers as a model and thus decorated with a vast sampling of field and border designs). This led to a simplification of the floral medallion design, which was then represented geometrically. At the end of the 19th century, a few factories were established in Heriz by weavers from Tebriz. The decorative theme introduced by the traders of Tebriz was classical: a medallion and spandrels; but the weavers of Heriz refused the use of cardboard, contrary to their tradition, which led to a simplification of the floral design with medallion, which was then represented geometrically. The Heriz medallions have a stylized star shape and extend almost to the border. The field is decorated with stems that bend at right angles to connect the serrated leaves and rosettes." The carpet is enhanced by numerous double crenellated polychrome medallions on a red background with stylized floral decoration. A navy blue border with geometric patterns surrounds the composition (Wear, old restorations and can be decreased) 344 x 253 cm
