JAPAN Scale vase decorated in gold lacquer takamaki-e with a peacock next to rocks, peonies, pines and waterfall on one side, the other representing a dignitary and his horse, the opening with a wide flat rim underlined with swastika and a collar, two large handles in the shape of a triple square spiral enhancing the belly. The vase rests on a four-legged saddle-shaped base bearing a terrace, made of wood decorated with geometric and stylized motifs and lacquered in gold. A cartouche on the belly gives the title of the scene, "Sumidagawa, Miyakodori no koji", inspired by a print from the series "Ancient Sites of the Eastern Capital" by Hiroshige.
