[VAR] François de Belleforest (1530-1583):... - Lot 84 - Vasari Auction
[VAR] François de Belleforest (1530-1583): "The great plant & vray would surround the Baulme". Amsterdam 1545. Woodcut. Subject size : 21 x 22 cm - Total size : 34,5 x 44 cm. Scotch tape top corners, small spots, reinforcement with Scotch tape on the back central folds Note: First known representation of a cave entrance, that of the Holy Balm as specified in the text, this woodcut was published in "La Cosmographie Universelle de tout le monde" (pages 340 & 341), printed in 1575 in two volumes in Paris by Nicolas Chesneau and Michel Sonnius with the French text by François de Belleforest. François de Belleforest was a French Renaissance writer, translator and poet. In 1568 he became a historian of King Henry III, but had to give up quickly because of inaccuracies. This is the French version of Sebastian Münster's "Cosmographia Universalis". The geographical information is mainly based on Abraham Ortelius and Braun & Hogenberg, but also comes from unknown sources. All maps and views of the Paris edition by Belleforest are very rare. The Bnf keeps a copy (dép. Maps and plans, ref. GE DD-459).
