[ITALY] James-Alexandre de Pourtalès, known... - Lot 109 - Vasari Auction
[ITALY] James-Alexandre de Pourtalès, known as de Pourtalès-Gorgier (1776-1855): "Interior view of the Latomies in Syracuse". 19th century. Lithograph. Total size : 31.7 x 47.3 cm. Mentions : Designed by Mr le Cte de Pourtales-Gorgier / Engraved by Hegui / Printed by Dumont. Freckles Note : Certainly part of a series of views lithographed after the drawings of James-Alexandre de Pourtalès. Before becoming the patron and art lover that we know, Pourtalès relates a journey to Malta and Greece, around 1803, according to the first plate, before his marriage with Anne-Henriette Falconet de Palézieux (in 1809). It was in good taste for the youth of good European society to set out on the traces of European antiquity, mainly to Italy or Greece.
