JAPAN A tortoiseshell vase decorated in gold lacquered takamaki-e with a peacock next to rocks, peonies, pine trees and waterfall on one side, the other representing a dignitary and his horse, the opening with a wide flat rim underlined with swastika and a collar, two large handles in the shape of a triple square spiral enhancing the belly. The vase rests on a four-legged saddle-shaped base bearing a terrace, made of wood decorated with geometric and stylised motifs and lacquered in gold. A cartouche on the body gives the title of the scene, "Sumidagawa, Miyakodori no koji", inspired by a print from the series "Ancient Sites of the Eastern Capital" by Hiroshige. Japan, end of the Meiji period, around 1900 (accidents and misses, restorations) Height of vase: 25 cm Total height: 43 cm
