LAFNET Luc (1899-1939) - Lot 351
LAFNET Luc (1899-1939) Head of a woman with lowered eyes Drypoint Signed and numbered 23/25 in pencil outside the plate Dim. subject : 15,3 x 10,5 cm - Dim. sheet : 32,5 x 25 cm A lithograph on bible paper after Blondeau showing a woman with her eyes down Ella (small wetnesses - 26,5 x 15,5 cm) Note: Luc Lafnet is a Belgian painter and cartoonist. He befriended Georges Simenon in the young artists' collective La Caque in Liège, which they frequented together. In 1917, he applied for the Prix de Rome and won second prize. He was the assistant of the cartoonist Rob-Vel on the first adventures of Bibor and Tribar and Spirou. There is still some uncertainty as to the exact role played by Luc Lafnet in the creation of Spirou: it is possible that he is the real author of the very first plate of Spirou, where the cartoonist who gives life to the character looks like a self-portrait of Lafnet and not Rob-Vel. Another version is that Rob-Vel drew only the character of Spirou, leaving the rest of the plate to Lafnet. He illustrated many works under his name, including, among others, the Flemish Legends by Charles De Coster, but he is best known for his illustrations of many erotic works printed in small numbers, or even unique, including Baudelaire, Sade, Théophile Gautier and even Le Grand 13 by his friend Simenon. He used various pseudonyms, notably Jim Black, for his illustrations of the collection Les Orties Blanches.
