NEW CALEDONIA - WALLIS AND FUTUNA Tapa fabric... - Lot 101 - Vasari Auction
NEW CALEDONIA - WALLIS AND FUTUNA Tapa fabric in beaten bark decorated with friezes of geometrical forms in brown tones 248 x 124,5 cm (tears and missing pieces) Note: Before the arrival of the Europeans, tapas had a utilitarian function similar to that of cloth. Most tapas were little or not decorated, the decorated pieces were the privilege of people of high rank or presented on exceptional occasions. Tapas are made from the bast (inner bark) of certain species of moraceae. The most used is the mulberry tree (Broussonelia papyrifera), followed by the pine tree (Artcarpus) and the fichus. Vegetable or mineral dyes are used, the colors are mainly brown, red, black and yellow.
