French school of the XIXth century, General LACOUR in the dress of a Colonel of Dragons in 1825, pastel on paper, 18,8 x 13,6 cm on sight, Jean Baptiste Alexandre LACOUR, born on 28/09/1777 in Paris, will have a dazzling career under the Empire and the Restoration. He entered the service of transport and military convoys as second driver on March 5, 1792, at the age of 15. At the age of 22, he joined the 20th Regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval on February 15, 1799, and was appointed brigadier on December 11, 1799, then fourrier on April 21, 1801. He was promoted to Chief Marshal on June 9, 1802, then to Warrant Officer on January 14, 1807. At the age of 32, he was appointed to the rank of Lieutenant on April 30, 1809, then Captain on September 21 of the same year. At the same time, his record of service led to his appointment as Aide de Camps to General CASTEX in September 1809. On November 21, he was promoted to Squadron Leader in the 23rd Regiment of Mounted Chasseurs, then to Major in the 4th Regiment of Light Horse (1813) before moving to the 4th Cuirassiers Regiment (January 9, 1814), then to the 12th Cuirassiers Regiment (July 14, 1814) and finally to the 22nd Cuirassiers Regiment in 1814, from which he was discharged in 1816. He was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel employed at the remonte in Strasbourg on March 1, 1819, then Colonel in May 1820. He commanded the Villers remonte depot from October 20, 1826 to September 1, 1828. He was appointed to the 6th Dragoon Regiment on November 16, 1828, and became Colonel on August 17, 1830, then was promoted to Marshal de Camps on June 16, 1834. He commanded the Moselle department on September 9, 1834, then the Ardennes department on June 8, 1835. Placed in the reserve section of the General Staff in 1839, he died on February 5, 1845. Campaigns: Years 7, 8 and 9 in the Army of the Rhine, Years 12 and 13 in the Army of the Coasts, Year 14, 1806, 1807, 1808 in Prussia and Poland. In 1809 he joined the Grande Armée, 1812-1813 campaign of Russia and Prussia with the Grande Armée. His military record shows numerous wounds, including a gunshot wound to the hand in front of Ulm in year 8, two saber wounds to the head in 1800, a gunshot wound to the right arm during a charge against the Uhlans on May 6, 1809 (while serving in the 20th Regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval), a gunshot wound to the left thigh in Lithuania in 1812. Decorations : Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honor on April 11, 1807, then Officer on September 28, 1813, Knight of the Order of Saint-Louis on July 19, 1814, Commander of the Legion of Honor on May 4, 1831 Literature : LACOUR is quoted in the memories of Captain PARQUIER, page 3 when PARQIER arrives in 1803 at the 20th Regiment of mounted chasseurs, he is then 17 years old and he is received by LACOUR who is then Maréchal des Logis-Chef. "It is him who made me a soldier" says PARQUIER, page 51 "Lieutenant, LACOUR is wounded on May 6, 1809 at Amstetten by a gunshot to the arm...", page 75: "LACOUR is named Captain with Lauriston on 21/09/1809"...LACOUR is also evoked in the memoirs of MARLOT, in volume III, page 253 "at the end of 1812 LACOUR is 1st Squadron Leader in the 23rd Chasseurs on horseback under the orders of Colonel MARLOT..." page 256 "severe criticisms of MARLOT for a misunderstood order having entrained of the consequences"...page 269, "loss of confidence in LACOUR, MARLOT dismisses him".
