KOTA - GABON Reliquary in repoussé brass... - Lot 154 - Vasari Auction
KOTA - GABON Reliquary in repoussé brass on wood core Blackened wood base Height Height : 60 cm Note : Oval face, dominance of the transversal crescent-shaped headdress and truncated lateral headdresses with rectilinear bases and vertical pendants. This is the "classical" style referred to as Kota, and seems to be attributable to the Franceville region. The use of brass-copper lamellae, often imported from Europe, is the major characteristic of reliquary figures from the north of the region, while the use of plates decorated with engraved motifs has become widespread in the styles and variants of those from the upper Ogooué valley, much further south, as far as the western Republic of Congo.
