French school of the 19th century Portrait of Duchemin Marie Angélique, widow Brulon (1772-1859) Oil on canvas (accidents and restorations) 43 x 34 cm Note: It was under the Second Republic, on August 15, 1851, that the Légion d'honneur was officially awarded for the first time to a woman, Marie-Angélique Duchemin veuve Brulon, second lieutenant at the Invalides, for her military services during the Revolution. Born in Dinan (Côtes-du-Nord) on January 20, 1772, daughter and sister of soldiers in the revolutionary armies, Marie-Angélique Duchemin married a soldier named Brulon, and followed him with his regiment (the 42nd in Corsica). After the deaths of her husband and father, Marie-Angélique decided, at the age of 20, to remain with the 42nd regiment, where she became a corporal, a caporal fourrier and then a sergeant-major.
