STUDIO NOBÉCOURT Sixty-three black-and-white... - Lot 280 - Vasari Auction
STUDIO NOBÉCOURT Sixty-three black-and-white photographs taken in Paris during the Occupation, most of them in the Marais district. Stamped on the back "Photographie Industrielle Nobécourt 15, rue Clapeyron Paris (VIIIè) Tel. EUR. 43-78" Stamp on back of 57 plates "Inspection Générale Hotel de Ville Services techniques Topographie et urbanisme". Most located on back in pencil Dim. 18.3 x 23.8 cm 13.2 x 18 cm (some soiling, creases, corroded corners) Note: These photographs were commissioned by the City of Paris and the Prefecture of the Seine (and therefore the Vichy government) between 1941 and 1943 from two industrial photographers: Cayeux and Nobécourt, both of whom had a street address, as evidenced by their stamps, the former at 32, avenue de la République (Xe) and the latter at 15, rue Clapeyron (VIIIe). "In fact, we ask them to photograph all the buildings we want to demolish, in order to give credence to the idea that these places are insalubrious", explains the architect with a passion for the Marais. According to the notes on the back of the prints, the character of the mysterious photographers - both of whom have Picardy names - was as follows. "Methodical and orderly, Albert Cayeux dates his negatives correctly and indicates the address. Nobécourt, on the other hand, whose first name we don't even know, never dates his pictures or gives street names. He even sometimes entered a false address! Incompetence or sabotage?" asks Patrice Roy, who has managed to pinpoint the exact location of each image.
