(VERSTEGAN Richard) - Theatrum Crudelitatum Haereticorum nostri Temporis. Antuerpiae, apud Adrianum Huberti, 1587 - 1 vol. in-12° - full soft antique vellum - 95 pp. including an engraved title page and 27 engravings (binding: drying of the vellum and stains - inside: upper margins cut, some pages missing a line, one leaf missing pp 45/46, wetness, tears and small tears, otherwise good condition of the engravings apart from one lack) Note: "Illustrated work printed in Antwerp, which became a Catholic stronghold after its reconquest by Philip II in 1585. It follows in the tradition, from Jacques Callot to Goya, of depicting the miseries and misfortunes of war on copperplate. A work of visual propaganda: the tortures inflicted on Catholics Verstegan shows the real or supposed crimes of Protestant heresy throughout Europe (France, England, the Netherlands). Everywhere, priests are hanged, drowned, eviscerated, women raped and children put to the sword. The martyrology ends with the beheading of Mary Stuart. (source Bibliothèque crimino Corpus)
