Small folio in two parts - speckled calf binding, double gilt fillet, ornate spine - including: a title with a vignette, a title-frontispiece and a cul-de-lampe repeated for each of the two parts, a headband illustrating "La Vertu Au Roy", a portrait of the author followed by a full-page plate before the Preface, 103 emblems in the text, two end-of-part vignettes - 16 ff + 105 ff - ex libris label (binding heavily worn, damage to jaws, first cover weakened, rubbing of boards, dull corners, missing headpieces and spine, tears and holes in leather - interior: numerous wet spots, some spotting) Note: Book of emblems, composed for the instruction of the young Louis XIV at the request of Cardinal Mazarin. Its considerable success led to numerous reprints.
