Poto-Poto School (Republic of Congo) - Lot 215
Poto-Poto School (Republic of Congo) Hunting scene - Woman with antelope Two gouaches on black paper One signed Bonasse lower left, the other Goï lower right 25.8 x 33 cm Note: L'école des peintres de Poto-Poto is a painting school founded in the Poto-Poto district of Brazzaville by Pierre Lods in 1951. Lods imposed no artistic rules on his students, preferring to let them express their creative spontaneity. Under the influence of Félix Ossali, Lods' first pupil, the Miké style, which means "small" in Lingala, developed. Composed of small figures with slender, schematic forms, it is reminiscent of the rock paintings of the Tassili. His breakthrough came in 1955-1956 with an exhibition at New York's MoMA. It was confirmed in 1958, when Lods sent several members of the Poto-Poto school to represent him at the Brussels World Fair.
